Foguang Dictionary of Buddhism (佛光大辭典) 　違反道理，觸犯禁條而招受苦報之惡行為，稱為罪或咎。亦有稱煩惱為‘罪’者，然大抵以身體、言語、意志（即身、口、意）等三方面所犯之惡行（業），稱為罪業。
　罪為惡之行為，故稱罪惡；以其能妨礙聖道，故稱罪障；又以其屬污穢之行為，故稱罪垢。復由于罪之行為可招致苦報，故又稱罪報。且其行為乃招罪報之根本，故亦稱罪根。
　罪有五逆罪與十惡罪，統稱為二罪。屬本質上之罪惡行為者，稱為性罪；而于本質上並無罪惡可言，僅違犯佛所制之禁戒者，則稱遮罪。另據薩婆多毗尼毗婆沙卷二載，比丘、比丘尼所犯之一切罪以輕重之別，可總別為五篇，即：(一)波羅夷罪，即淫、盜、殺、妄等四重禁。(二)僧殘罪，即故出精等十三事。(三)波逸提罪，包括三十舍墮與九十單提。(四)提舍尼罪，例如于蘭若受食等四事。(五)突吉羅罪，分為百眾學與七滅諍兩類。此外，據大毗婆沙論卷一一六之說，于身口意三業之中，以意業之惡為大罪；一切煩惱之中，以邪見為大罪；一切惡行之中，以破僧罪為最重。﹝梵網經卷下、瑜伽師地論卷九十九、俱舍論卷十八、大智度論卷十三﹞（參閱‘戒’2896）
